Real Life Accounting for Non-Accountants
http://www.reallifeaccounting.com

Real Life Accounting is an online, completely
self-tutorial accounting course that is specifically
designed for non-accountants. The course is geared
towards those persons planning to start or already
working in a small business, but also applicable to
bookkeepers, office staff, college students, financial
planners, bank personnel, or anyone looking for a quick
review of account. After working in the accounting field
for 20 years, author John Day's philosophy was to make it
simple and leave no stone unturned. The course incorporates
five different teaching techniques:

1. The entire course is conducted in a student/teacher
dialogue. By doing this, known stumbling blocks for
students have been identified and addressed.

2. The course utilizes "frequent feedback", which is almost
like programmed learning in that the you read a short amount
of text and then take a quiz called a "memory jogger". The
purpose is to reinforce what you have just read. In addition,
you can not go forward until the memory jogger has been
completed. This prevents you from jumping ahead and becoming
overwhelmed.

3. The course consists of short study topics so you can
complete a study set in less than 30 minutes, and you can
generally complete the entire course in an average of 20
hours.

4. An analogical comparison of building a house is used
throughout the course. This gives you a way to compare where
you are at in the course and why what you are doing is
important. In other words, it gives you something concrete
to compare to the abstract.

5. You'll note that the conceptual learning takes place
"brick by brick" until the "house" is finished. Each step
of the accounting process has been thought out to answer
almost all of your questions. This step-by-step approach
feeds you a "bite-sized" piece of information you can
understand.

Real Life Accounting for Non-Accountants is a non-academic
approach and includes no accounting material that is not
pertinent to learning what a basic financial statement is,
how it is organized, how to prepare it, and, how to analyze
it. The course teaches you how to translate a physical event
into an accounting transaction, i.e. how to write a general
journal entry. Once these basic skills are learned, you can
venture out in any direction you desire.

However, the course is more than just accounting information.
It also takes a "real life" situation and deals with typical
problems of a small business. It has many business and tax
tips sprinkled throughout, as well as checklists, templates,
forms, flowcharts, etc that can be downloaded. You can gain
practical experience as a sole-proprietor, partnership, and,
corporation. There is even a short section on business
valuations and non-profit organizations.

A certificate of completion is provided to those who finish
and ongoing support services are offered at the site. This
course is not designed to lead to a degree. It has been
created to show you how accounting can be applied in "real
life", and that, if you can add, subtract, multiply, divide,
know left from right, and, up from down, then you can
understand these concepts and put them to good use.

You will find that the course is very well organized with
an index, glossary, side-bars, and a drop-down tool box.

You can take the first study section for free to see how it
works and the introductory section includes a listing of all
the course content.

Guest Review - Academy of Web Specialists
_________________________________________

Nancy Nelson, of Calgary, Alberta returns as our guest reviewer
for this month:

Review of Essential Foundations in
Search Engine Positioning Offered
by Academy of Web Specialists
http://www.academywebspecialists.com/

I tried in vain for well over a year to teach myself how
to achieve higher search engine rankings. I visited forums,
purchased a variety of software programs and subscribed to
ezines. Why wasn't this successful for me?

To start with, the search engines are ever changing. What
worked yesterday may not work tomorrow. Secondly, I found
that varied sources often provided conflicting information.
It's not always easy to discern the good from the ineffective.
Frankly, I'm a pretty conservative person. I didn't like the
risks associated with trial and error. I didn't want to
subject myself to being "banned" by the search engines.
Lastly, the time commitment to learn this on your own is huge.

Failing to find local course offerings on this subject, I
turned to distance learning. I found a limited number of
courses on the Internet offering a curriculum on web site
positioning. I selected the Academy of Web Specialists for
two reasons -- I would receive an accreditation and they did
not focus on one specific software tool.

The Academy of Web Specialists offers several versions of the
course. There's the "Essential Foundations in Search Engine
Positioning" (which I have just completed). This is available
is several different formats, with or without an instructor.
If you've had some exposure to this subject, you may also
challenge the "Foundations" and proceed directly to the
advanced course. It too is available with or without an
instructor.

I registered in the eight week "Foundations" course with
an instructor. This course started at ground zero and
stepped the students through the process of choosing keywords,
incorporating them into your website, submitting to search
engines and evaluating results. Using a website of the student's
choosing, every week you are introduced to a new approach/concept
to apply to your project. I saw amazing results with my
project over the course of eight weeks!

There are no prerequisites to this course, but knowledge of
HTML is useful.

For my tuition, I received weekly lesson plans, regular
ongoing contact with my instructor, access to the forums
at the Academy's website, access to almost daily online
chats and access to prior chat transcripts. The lessons
themselves contain a wealth of information as well as
recommendations for tools and other sources.

I highly recommend this course to individuals who really
want to learn the basics on this subject. I plan to proceed
to the advanced course right away.

The Internet is changing so very quickly and it's hard enough
to learn new things without having to relearn the parts
that are changing. This course is a great way to learn
to walk before learning to run down the path to search
engine optimization.
