Authoring & Publishing Your Own Course
http://www.click2learn.com

For this month's review, I thought it would be fun to turn
the tables and, instead of learning something new, try my
hand at developing an online course!

There are many resources on the Internet for course development
and for this issue I have used Click2Learn.com's Authoring and
Publishing tools for online course creation. Creating a course
at Click2Learn is accomplished entirely online (no software to
install) and is free to use.

To access this program, just point your browser to
http://www.click2learn.com/c2l/ and then click through on the
Authoring & Publishing tab and you will be taken to the
orientation page of the publishing tool. The sections here
will guide you step-by-step through the publishing process:
the definition of e-content, publishing and/or creating of
e-content, FAQ, system requirements, samples of e-content and
Authoring 101.

Particularly helpful, Authoring 101 is a must read and
provides guidelines for the writing of procedures and
instructions, defining your audience and how to engage your
learners, determining course objectives, organizing and
writing your course outline, and lastly, preparing to publish.

At this point you may want to see what the end product looks
like and examples of courses produced are included here or
you can browse through the catalog of published courses. Many
are free - I recommend "How to Train Your Human" by Asmartdog
(the "moaning dog" audio file is pretty funny!). As you go
through these course examples you'll see that you can
incorporate a variety of graphics, images, video and audio
files, as well as interactive questions and quizzes to
enhance your course and make it more engaging for the reader.

The next step is to begin to create your course and two options
are available: you can choose to upload your materials and files
or you can create your content online with the Authoring tool.
Building your course is as easy as using any word processing
program - you won't need to know HTML - its just a matter of
typing directly in the template and then choosing your
formatting, inserting web links, inserting graphics, video and
audio files. Also available are several formats of quizzes and
questions to add interactivity to your course. And don't worry
if you get stuck - online how-to guides are just a click away.

You can save your work and return at any time to pick up where
you left off. Then when you are finished and happy with your
course, simply click on "Publish" and your course will be
submitted for review and once accepted, your course will be
published in the course catalog!

Click2Learn also lets you choose to offer your course for free
or for a price that you determine, enabling you to share in
the revenue earned from sales of your online course.

Even though I didn't complete the process and actually publish
a course, I did build a few pages and found the tools to be
very easy to use and in no time at all you can create an
online course that is professional in appearance, engaging,
fun, informative and interactive.

So if you have some knowledge to share or expertise on a
particular subject, try Click2Learn's authoring tools and
create your very own online course! (and maybe even make a
few bucks!)
